The Shins are a band from Albuquerque, New Mexico that's been around since 1996. Members include James Mercer (vocals, guitar), Mark Watrous (guitar), Casey Foubert (guitar), Yuuki Matthews (bass), Patti King (keyboards), and Jon Sortland (drums). Heartworms is their fifth studio album release.

Heartworms is a confident, well-made record that falls short of anything enduring or spectacular. The album does offer glimpses of Mercer's songwriting gifts, but it ultimately ends up feeling like a warm-up for something more compelling. I would describe the music as a blend of alternative rock and alternative pop. Despite some memorable songs like "Name For You," "Heartworms," and "The Fear," the rest of the album just doesn't offer anything particularly satisfying or exciting.
