Cut Chemist (Jurassic 5, Ozomatli) has announced Die Cut, the long-awaited follow up to The Audience's Listening. Hear the first of seventeen new tracks from the band's second full-length, "Work My Mind" (ft. Chali 2na and Hymnal).
Die Cut, which features appearances by Deantoni Parks (The Mars Volta), Biz Markie, actress Erika Christensen (Parenthood), tune-yards, Farmer Dave Scher, Dexter Story, and more, serves as a natural progression from his now classic 2006 debut.
Now, Die Cut signals the start of a new era for Cut Chemist. It's a rebirth he's earned.
"This is the death of a musical identity and the birth of another," Cut Chemist insists. "It isn't just the cut-and-paste style anymore. I'm collaborating with more musicians and sampling less. This is different. The content is emotionally heavier, even though it's still fun. It harks back to the energy you can share with live musicians rather than being a DJ alone on stage. I wanted to capture that with this style of music."
After entering the industry in 1987 as a founding member of Jurassic 5 and Ozomatli, The Audience's Listening established him as a cultural force. A tour with Shakira in Europe followed a sync in an Apple commercial and the viral sprawl of "What's The Altitude." Cut Chemist even made appearances in the Academy Award-nominated films Juno, Jennifer's Body, and Up In The Air. 2009 saw him seize his place in the pantheon of Los Angeles legends by headlining the Hollywood Bowl alongside DJ Shadow. Adding legacy to his already legendary live reputation he launched the Sound of the Police tour and acclaimed Mix Set, where he abandoned the typical two turntable setup in favor of just a single deck, a mixer, loop pedal to do live samples from original vinyl pressings. Riding the momentum, he launched the Tunnel Vision tour, his own festival-style tour, where each act, including Edan, Paten Locke, Mr. Lif, Myka 9, and Deantoni participated in the other's sets.
