Born in Tokyo, Japan, Tsutomu Shimura, also known as Lyrics Born, is a hip hop artist based out of Berkeley, California. He is also known as one-half of the duo Latyrx. Real People, his fourth studio release, is heavily influenced by funk, R&B and jazz and features appearances from artists such as Galactic, Trombone Shorty, Ivan Neville, Corey Glover and the Preservation Hall Jazz Band.

I’ve been a huge fan of Lyrics Born ever since I first heard of the Lyrics Born Variety Show mixtapes. He has a snappy, smooth rapping style that’s extremely catchy and infectious. He’s definitely one of my favorite hip hop artists out there so I was pretty excited when I caught word of Real People and the artists he was collaborating with. You just can’t go wrong with some talent like that backing you up, right? First off, let me just say that all of the proper ingredients are at play here. The music is indeed heavily influenced by funk, R&B and jazz. In that regard, the record grooves just like you would expect it to. But after the first couple of tracks you quickly start to realize that something just isn’t quite right. Musically, Lyrics Born’s lyrics and rapping style just doesn’t ever quite mesh well with the instrumentation. Everything just feels slightly off kilter and awkward. Unfortunately, with Real People, the chemistry just isn’t there. Most memorable tracks include “All Hail the Queen,” “Chest Wide Open,” and “Real People.”
