Youth Lagoon, also known as Trevor Powers, is a solo artist based out of Boise, Idaho. The first half of his third studio release, Savage Hills Ballroom, is pretty good, then things tend to go a little downhill from there. While you can certainly admire Powers for sharpening his sound, you really need to be in the right frame of mind to really appreciate this record.

Powers' vocals are usually hit or miss with me and I basically feel the same way about the new album. He can be an acquired taste, sometimes coming across as a bit too whiny. I really need to dig what's going on musically to really appreciate his voice. On tracks, such as “Highway Patrol Stun Gun”, the instrumentation flows with him beautifully. This is a fine example of some of Savage Hills' better moments. I would describe the music as alternative pop with minimal electronics and somber lyrics. Some other memorable tracks include “Officer Telephone”, "The Knower" and "Kerry".
