David Gilmour is a singer-songwriter best known as the guitarist and co-lead vocalist of the band Pink Floyd. He is regarded as one of the best guitar players of all time with a style characterized by blues-influenced psychedelic rock. Gilmour's fourth solo release, Rattle That Lock, offers a few hints of greatness here and there but never quite captures the spirit or thrill this record deserves.

Rattle That Lock starts off very promising with "5 am". It's a gorgeous instrumental that's reminiscent of something you would expect to hear from a Pink Floyd release. Other than some of Gilmour's trademark guitar chops, the Pink Floyd comparisons end there. It’s not that I expected the rest of the record to sound like Pink Floyd, well, perhaps just a little. It's one hell of a tease. Unfortunately, the rest of the album is a bit of a mixed bag. Most of the songwriting is pretty lackluster and there are only a couple good tracks with lyrics, such as "A Boat Lies Waiting" and "Dancing Right In Front of Me". There's also a couple more engaging instrumentals in "Beauty" and "And Then...". Other than that Rattle That Lock is a release that never fully satisfies.
